English Reflective Statement
The English Language Arts/ English Development Frameworks goal is to prepare instructors to be fully content knowledgeable, and guide them to carefully prepare lessons that are part of the four strands: reading, writing, speaking and listening, and language in grades K-12. The instructors would guide students to develop readiness for college, career, and civic life. The way that this goal could be reached is by the use of rich and varied language that is learned through experiences, and also by reading various types of books. The exposure to these two things will enrich oral skills and written skills, help them analyze the cognitive and linguistic demands of a text. Students will be able to interpret implicit and explicit meaning in texts. The use of grouping to maximize learning, along with diversity in the groups by interest, skills, experiences, talents, and ELD. The use of scaffolding will help struggling students to obtain the temporal guidance, students may need so that by the time they graduate high school; students will be college and career ready.
The English courses have taught me many of the required skills are English 1A: Freshman Composition, Lierature 40: Children's Literature and Literature 11A: World Literature I have learned through these classes that there are very various ways of writing, and various types of reading books. In Lit.40 I learned to read and analyze children's literature and also how to analyze various times of literature from different part of the world in Lit.11A. In Eng. 1A we did various types of book analysis by comparing and contrasting stories we read in class. We learned how to incorporate them into our writing, which is also something we did in Lit. 40. The use of stories to answer prompts or to write an essay. We used quotes from various books to make a point or to refer to something we were showing that was important. In Lit. 40 we learned about the various types of children's book there is, we used these books to learn about historical fiction, the difference between a fairy tale and a fable, myths and many others. Throughout the reading of the story we analyzed definitions, the symbolism, stories had, the significance of the story, is it relatable to children or the time period that was written. Overall, these three classes helped me learn how to break down a book, analyze and how to incorporate it into my writing in order to make a stronger argument.
My artifact is a collection of the different tests and worksheets based on the reading done in these classes. The reason I chose these artifacts is because they demonstrate that I can properly read a book, and analyze it in great detail in order to write a great paper or answer to a prompt given by the instructor. Lit 11A was one of my hardest class, I struggled so much learning to connect the reading into a paper, but according to my test I did a great job applying it. As for my artifact in Lit. 40 I chose these worksheets because they show the importance of learning symbolism, the differences between a book, noble, fable and a fairy story, a historical book or a fiction book. There are many types of book and using the right ones in a classroom will increase the students vocabulary, written, and oral skills if the books are challenging. The frameworks asks for teachers by promoting rich and extensive language, promoting diversity, and showing enthusiasm for reading by choosing books that are relatable to students but also challenging. These artifacts show that these courses showed me how to master these skills and it is shown by the artifacts that demonstrate in detail my understanding in the given context given by the use of analyzation.
